Yep, im using a mac.

This was kind of an impulse buy at the weekend as i needed to get a mew MP3 player (my last 3rd gen ipod packed up) so I thought to myself, ipod nano. I don't really have much time anymore to listen to music as I now drive everywhere and have a 4 wheel ipod with the ammount of CD's in the car. But i still needed somthing for those odd occasions where i fancy some music and there is nothing around to play it on. So, into the apple store with intentions of buying a nano, and out with a nano and macbook....Damn...how did that happen? Pesky apple with thier good looking computers.

Anyway, I actually kinda like this thing, i've never used a mac before apart from randomly jabbing at them in the apple store and PC world when i have been passing by. Yet ive now been using this as my primary system for 5 days now and I have to say that OS X really is far ahead of the pack in terms of ease of use for the end consumer. As a windows network admin by trade i should like things to be a bit more complicated yet OS X seems to just get the job done without moaning every 5 mins like windows does. For a day to day computer for surfing the web, checking e-mails, blogging ect.. ect.. basicly anything apart from games and .NET apps this is a perfect computer. I'm even posting this via the use of somthing called a wiget, all i need to do is hit f12 and a bunch of little programmes like this blogging tool, a clock, little post it note things, RSS feed reader, all just pop up out of nowhere and then if i hit the same key again they go away. But more to the point, it just happens, the hard drive dosnt click, it dosnt take a couple of seconds to do it, it just does it with no complaining from the hardware or the OS.

As much as i rave on about this being a really easy OS to use (and i could rave on about my new macbook for a couple more pages) you can still geek out, this is UNIX underneath the hood remember, and more to the point you have access to it via the terminal and after figuring out how to enable the root user you are away to bash away at a shell as much as you like (excuse the pun)

I have 2 weeks to return this bit of kit if i want to, but it is becoming more and more likey that I am going to be keeping it and e-baying off my old laptop to keep me afloat this month (£750 is a heafty dent in most peoples wallets)

newho, we shall see.......

Tesco Value Tennis

Ok, this is so cool. Well... in shape anyway. I know that Microsoft and Dell are good friends on the PC front, but would there be any chance that insperation for the xbox 360 was drawn from this shape? I'm throwing it out there, maybe the designers had dell computers in thier offices, maybe they were both designed by the same team, who knows. Or maybe even Microsoft used the same production lines for their 360 case as the dell cases so minimal modification to the machinary was needed, resulting in lowing costs. Who knows? Philippe Durand, Chairman of ARC International, the company which developed the process, would only say 'Kwarx is a new material' but jealously guarded the actual formula.

Kwarx glass is handblown crystal and is supposed to retain lustre and transparency as well as being unbreakable.

This is all well and good as i am sure that many wine glasses get broken each year, and who wouldnt want a set of 'unbreakable glass'. The price point is going to be the problem with marketing it, if you can mass produce this product on the same sort (or slighly higer) price tag than a normal set then there will be a huge market for this product, but, if the price point is somthing in the region of £10+ it will forever be consigned to sites such as firebox and iwantoneofthose.com.

Excellent idea in theory, it will be the production costs that hold it back.

Lordi At Eurovision

I had to give a mention to Lordi, the winners of eurovision 2006. Acording to wikipedia they got the highest score from any eurovision contest. I'm not too sure what cause the win for this very different entry to the contest, but it must either be that everyone has finaly got bored of eurovision and voted the underdog for the comedy of it, or it was because that this was a very original song in comparison to the rest of the pop songs that are normally played at eurovision. What i cant understand about the contest is the fact that the UK can put out alot of good music acts, yet we and every other country always seem to let the nonce of the pack on stage. (you only need to look at the UK's entry into eurovision this year to prove that theory)

The Da Vinci Code movie

Well.... i was expecting alot more.

The evening started out with a small gathing at the odean cinema in birmingham for about 60 people including myself and the boss who were invited by APC. The meaning of this, to see the Da Vinci Code (paid for by APC) and have a spot to eat from a buffet with champagne (also care of APC) the catch being that the trailers before the movie where replaced by an APC infomercial (the kind of thing you get on the shopping channel).
Myself never being one to turn down a free drink decided that this would be an excellent oppertunity to get a bit drunk for nothing and promptly proceded to down nigh on to 15 odd glasses of champers.

Well, a while after ariving. and after being guided into the cinema, and after watching the APC infomercials, the movie finaly starts.

This turns out to be one of the most over-hyped and un-forfilling movies that I have seen since A.I. (somthing you should avoid like the plauge). The movie is not all to bad, its not a bad movie, but it certainly isnt a good one. Its somthing that would sit in your DVD collection quite happily yet only ever get watched once. The whole feel of the movie felt plain, un-envigorating, and missing a sense of excitement. There where never any, on the edge of your seat moments so i dont know how it can be classed as a thriller. A much better example of a movie of this type would be "National Treasure" wich is much more exciting in the puzzle solving that must be performed on screen for the basis of the plot lines, and Mr Cage seems to be a man more into his role than Mr Hanks, who seems to play a zombie on set.

To sum up, if you havnt read the book, then go see the movie, but dont be expecting anything more than mediocre.

Well, i have finaly found the right cable for my digi cam, wich means that the below pics can be published on the web. type='text'>The nintendo booth stampede

This was the last day of E3 with the last chance to play the nintendo Wii, since the last 2 days have been 6 hour lines to play the console people where not taking any chances on missing thier go to play the Wii. From the comments on the net ti seems that it was, run, or dont play.

This shows 3 different angles from the stampede, one from above, one from the showroom floor, and another from a guy in the crowd with a camera.

I think nintendo have ticked off both sony and microsoft this year, as i cant rember any E3 when there was this much exitement for playing a new console. The nintendo shareholders will be laughing all the way to the bank come Q4 2006.

must stop posting odd vids

I really must stop posting stuff like this, its runining the readable content. For those who dont know, this is basicly a collection of security camera footage of fights in the walsall area from about 98-2000, many are involving some serious punch ups with major injurues.

Basicly its like bumfights in walsall but with pissed up chav's beating the living daylights out of each other for no reason.

This DVD has not yet been released to the world via the medium of the internet, or at least not to my knowlage. I dont know where the original came from, who who edited the original soundtrack on it (these security cameras have no mic's so some music was implimented over the top) all I do know is that is current method of distribution is by copied DVD. One person will copy the disc and pass it to 10 people then those 10 people will make more copies and so forth.

The quality really isnt anything to write home about, imagine long-play VHS, but worse. I plan to be ripping this disc and running it through some conversion filters to tart up the quality a bit and maybe even release a few clips onto the internet for all to see. The original discs and the full unedited version i think should really stay underground to the point of staying away from internet distribution even though it highlights the current situation of the country come fri/sat night in most major town/city centers around the country.

Maybe when i figure out exactly what to do with this footage and track it back to the source i will format it in a way that the general public in walsall town can get a feel of what is really going on when their back is turned and the dangers the town now faces from drunken idiots on a sat night.

Nintendo Steal E3

Have a look at this article, and the below vid, and i think i was right when i said that nintendo could steal the show.

Woo nintendo me thinks

Sex addict

I am a sex addict: This is a small indie flim, but the trailer is on apple.com so its not porn, dont let the title fool you. But from the E3 to the web link via 1000's of people there blogging away and releasing vids and pics, there really dosnt seem to be anything else there!

It seems that nintendo have done what they set out to do by stealing the show. Sony have been ripped apart by consumers and developers alike because of thier inclusion of tilt sensors in thier new pad that only one game has been modified to work for so far, Microsoft really dont seem to have got a look in as what they really needed to show was some halo3 and forza 2 in-game footage and all they have come up with so far is pre-rendered teasers for them and nothing to play. Not a good thing.

It seems that thanks to this mass amount of publicity and driving the market ahead with new ideas rather than making older ones look pretty add this to the potential price point of $150 at launch and i think there is a real winner here.

Well, when i say real winner i mean IBM who are making the main processing chips for all 3 next gen consoles, they must be laughing all the way to the bank to make thier huge pile of cash just that little be bigger.

Either way, i would love to be at E3 right now, and I will be buying a Wii on launch, and maybe even a PS3 (the lower end one) if the games are right.

One more point i have to make, there will never be a winner in this console war as all 3 companies will be around with another console in 5-6years time, and the game starts all over again.

<div Now looking at what sony have done with their PS3 controller is it just me or have they done this twice before.

I dont mean the design of the controller, but I mean blatantly ripping off nintendo.

When there was the SNES there came shoulder buttons, so sony thought, right, good idea, well have 4 instead of 2.

N64 comes around, hello analog controls in the mainstream consoles, so sony thought, right, good idea, lets bodge 2 onto our current-gen consoles controller and sell it off again.

PS3 comes along and the best they can come up with is a boomerang, and now since nintendo announce motion tracking and tilt sensing, sony think, right, good idea, lets put it in our controller too.

I really dont think that sony have anything in the way of innovation, yet they seem to really know what they are doing when it comes to marketing. If they get the games right on the PS3 in the first 6 months then the xbox 360 does not stand a chance in hell of winning this console war, thanks to it coming out a year early all that is available to it is current-gen titles with tarted up textures and rez.

I own a 360 and I bought it on launch, I also own a stack of games for it, buying them just hoping that there was something that my 360 could do better then the others on the market apart from making things look pretty. But the hard point is that it is really really hard to make new games and not just re-hashes of old franchises if you dont have a new method of interacting with the virtual world infront of you.

Motion sensing confirmed for Revolution Nunchaku attachment.

It has been confirmed that the Nunchaku attachment for the Revolution controller will be capable of sensing motion as well. It's called google pages and allows you to use google as a webhost for pages designed by their browser based page creator software. Its a pretty neat tool, nothing to match dreamweaver but it does allow the amateur to create a page in very little time at all, and for the more advanced web monkey there is the option to edit the code manually. The most useful thing that I can think for this service is that google should be a webhost that can handle such things as the digg and slashdot effects. If it seems that you are going to be posting a link on digg or slashdot that might make front page and therefore sercum to this problem, why not try ripping the content or the code from the site and use your google account to post it onto your googlepage. Its not a blog, but more a fully featured webs site, so it should take the kind of formatting that you would be throwing at it. There are no details as to bandwith limiting or total traffic cap, but if google cant handle slashdot and digg traffic, who can?

P.S. As before if anyone needs gmail invites, just drop me an e-mail.
<img width='1' height='1' It seem one guy like the ewok village concept just a little too much and has made somthing that looks like the modern equivilent of an ewok treehouse. It is compleatly spherical, but the insides look a bit like a caravan (or camper to you yanks) that you would take away on a weekend trip. Seems like the pricetag is $45k+ so i think i would be buying the flashhy car or the extention to the house rather than a tree, pod, caravan, ewok tree house, thing....

Quake 3 in a Browser

"After putting Half-Life, Quake 1, Doom, and other gaming classics in a browser, Necromanthus has now started work on a Quake 3 version. Dont these people understand that linux is no where near a commercial desktop OS yet, its just way to complicated and the differnences between different distros is just too great. It will never replace windows in the home user set up, it may gain a foothold on business desktops if the IT team knows enough to configure the distro they way they want and to get all the apps designed for that company up and running on linux. Linux over the next few years will only succeed in the server and tech-savvy user markets and will no take over the desktop market untill either SUSE or Red Hat get thier advertising hats on and start pushing it.

read more | digg story

Free ADSL in the UK

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4893194.stm

It seems like carphone warehouse are brancing out with it talk talk service even more, they now want to provide free ADSL connections to people who sign up to its talk talk phone service and there does not seem to be any mention of it being an ad driven service. Now the thing is, the talk talk phone package is supposed to be free between talk talk customers, and quite competitive in its pricing when it comes to calls outside of that network. So how the heck do they plan to make a profit on this? and will it go the same way as the totaly free dial up services from a few years back and never acutualy materialise, or could it be a whole new busniness model? more people on your service, more people directed to your homepage/portal by default, build up the advertising revenue that way?. I really dont know, but what i do know is, i hope it works and other companies catch on, as a free net service for everyone in the UK would bridge the digial divide better than any of the current scemes. This is another point to make to back up Microsofts vision of making quality games and not churing out loads of B grade titles and selling them only on a mass marketing push. They realise that all they have over sony in the race for the topspot (nintendo is irrelivent here as they are not in competion with sony or microsoft, they are making way more money than both on selling game snad consoles) is way more money. The war between sony and microsoft is going to be won with exclisive titles, becuase most games will be created for both systems and whatever way you look at it and however many fanboys say how l33t or awesome one of them is, they are both the same console and will both play the same games. Sony is relying soly on developer loyaly, were as microsoft is slowly stealing all the developers from under thier feet. If microsoft can aqure shares in Rockstar, Square, Capcom and Blitz games. I do think it may well be all over for sony, and not just on the console front. The amount of mony they would loose would cause serious damage to the rest of thier company.

Apple Boot Camp Beta

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Take a look at this, remember the first announcement of an intel based x86 mac? The very first thing i thought when reading about that was, can I run windows? Now I dont own a mac and i never have done, i have never had the chance to sit down an play with one either. I'm a windows guy with a dash of linux thrown in for good measure and would of never even considered a mac untill the x86 announcement. I dont think that switching to OS X full time would be a good idea as im a windows admin and we work on a soley microsoft network, and my home servers are based around fedora core. Yet i am in the market for a new laptop.

This threw up a couple of questions, could i go for a mac? and would it be rewarding in the long term to use and master yet another OS platform?

When the first mac running windows hacks started floating on the net a couple of weeks back it really got me thinking, but i wouldnt want to make the dive with some unsuported software no matter if 1000's of people have got it to work, many others havnt. But now apple have release thier version of this bootloader to get xp up and running, wich is alot more an atractive prospect than a hack to get windows xp up and running. It also means that apple knew how to do this for a long time but wanted to see how the community delt with the propblem, maybe to see how many security holes they could discover on the way, maybe to just watch them sweat with hours and hours of trying and failing. All i know is that apple has gone down the right path and this will push up thier share prices even more (not as much an impact as say itunes and the ipod).

There is one final problem before i make the switch though. I will be buying a laptop, or powerbook, or whatever you wish to call it. If i knew how to right click with the trackpad. That is the one final thing that apple now need to sort out, make a right clicking trackpad. Just call it somthing like the mighty-pad, i dont really care. Then there really is no reason to buy a dell or acer laptop or any other make if you are using it for office and home use and not gaming.

I for one, would then be buying a mac, for the sole fact of linux, OS X, and windows XP all booting on the same machine naitivly.
